Our new study finds that meeting Olympic accommodation needs could deliver 10,000–12,000 new homes, representing a major housing legacy for the Cape Town city-region.
Findings:
Cape Town has ~19,000 hotel rooms; short of 41,000 room IOC requirement but presents a big opportunity for housing in the region
The initial accommodation concept proposes delivering 47,000 to 50,000 rooms for Games stakeholders
This would be achieved through: moderate hotel growth, new university accommodation, and one or more media villages.
University accommodation could contribute 5,000–8,000 rooms, with long-term conversion to student housing.
A media village providing up to 15,000 rooms is proposed, incorporating a mix of affordable, social, inclusionary, and market housing in key locations across the region.
Cruise ships not used to meet requirement, but used as a backup
An Athletes Village will further likely add 3,500 to 4,000 new homes too
Accommodation for spectators and workforce needs is expected to be met through existing options such as Airbnb, guesthouses, and other non-hotel accommodation.
