Watch: How can Cape Town extract the maximum legacy from major events like the Olympic Games?
A video interview series by Our Future Cities, shot in 2011, unpacking the concept of liveability under various themes including the definition of liveability, transport, events, densification, tourism and urban form.
Major events are great opportunities for any city as they create platforms for the city to grow and expand. It’s important that during these events a city fully embraces all communities within their city. A major event hosted within a city becomes a sort of advertising campaign for the city which in turn helps to not only boost tourism levels but also the city’s income.
Andrew Boraine says “…we should use events as a way of mobilizing particular step changes towards a city’s goals…”. Some may argue that the 2010 FIFA World Cup did not fully embrace the opportunity to maximize it’s legacy.
